Last Saturday on the UFC 273 main card, we saw the welterweight showdown the world was waiting for. Superstar superstar Khamza Shemayev (11-0) finally got a shot at his former welterweight competitor Gilbert Burns (20-5).
The odds of this rivalry were almost comical to the point that they were lopsided. It was obvious that everyone thought Chemayev would run Gilbert Burns just as he had gone through all of his previous UFC competitions.
However, this is not what happened at all. From the opening bell, Burns made it clear that this would be a fight. Having only been injured twice before inside the octagon, Chimayev absorbed over 100 goals from the former title contender.
After a close first round, Chemayev brought down Burns near the end of the round. It looks like he’s going to get the hiatus at UFC 273 for a second, but Burns pulled it off. In the second round, Burns took charge and sounded an exciting evening in the rounds, One Piece.
In the last round, Chemayev composed and really took control. However, Burns fought back in the last minute and made things interesting. However, all three judges approved Chemayev’s victory in the final round and the decision awarded him the win at UFC 273.
What after UFC 273?
Nobody was really underestimating Khamzat Chimaev before UFC 273, but now you can’t deny him. The lead player is one of the best weightlifters on the planet and winning over Burns shows how special he is.
Now that it has been tested against elite competition, battles are getting bigger and better from now on. So what will the UFC do next with its budding star? Well, Dana White hinted that she would like to do ABC Fight Night under the title of Chimaev and former interim champ Colby Covington.
Kamaru Usman and Leon Edwards are expected to fight for the UFC welterweight title during the summer. Covington has already lost twice to Usman, but if he wins another fight, the promotion will be willing to fight a third fight. Usman also said he would have a third fight with Covington.
A win over Colby Covington would make Chemayev the number one contender. I think the UFC will push for this fight while ensuring the winner gets the championship title. Either we see Covington get his third shot, or, by the end of the year, Shemayev’s punches could have his crowning moment.
