First, the rumors were true. The 2023 Toyota GR Corolla uses the same 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine as the GR Yaris. But thanks to a new exhaust, more boost, and refueling, the Corolla is even more powerful. The extra horsepower and torque are dampened a bit by the Yaris’ 300-pound weight advantage.
However, this still gives the 2023 Toyota GR Corolla the same power-to-weight ratio as the 2004 Impreza WRX STi. That car managed to run 4.9 seconds from 0-60 mph. And remember, some testers beat the GR Yaris’s official 5.5-second 0-62 mph claims by some margin.
So, on paper, the GR Corolla has a 2022 Subaru WRX that excels in power and weight. In theory, that should make it faster, at least in a straight line. And it’s not like the 2022 WRX has an advantage with the optional CVT. Sure, the GR Corolla is manual only, but the WRX is one of several cars that are faster with a stick.
Still, car and driverThe 2022 Subaru WRX estimates that it can still win or tie the drag race. But then, these sports cars are just more than that.
Will the 2023 Toyota GR Corolla beat the 2022 Subaru WRX on pavement and gravel?
Race-inspired, both the Toyota GR Corolla 2023 and 2022 Subaru WRX have all-wheel drive. In the case of the GR Corolla, it is a model-specific system developed through racing, from [Toyota’s] crowd string “,” car and driver Says. And while both cars offer multiple four-wheel drive modes for different driving conditions, only Toyota’s system allows drivers to adjust the torque split.
In addition to the trick all-wheel drive system, the Toyota GR Corolla 2023 offers an optional front and rear limited-slip differential. LSDs come standard with the Circuit version, which also has a carbon roof, rear spoiler and hood. This lid also has more slots than standard aluminum slots. You can’t get any of these features in WRX 2022.
Admittedly, the WRX GT has adaptive shocks, which are not available on Toyota. And for 2022, Subaru stiffened the WRX’s chassis, lowered its center of gravity, modified the suspension, and installed a faster steering rack. Additionally, these plastic fender panels have aerodynamic benefits. So, a Subaru sedan isn’t necessarily outgunned by a Toyota hatchback.
However, the GR Corolla isn’t just an AWD-powered version of the regular Corolla Hatchback. Its suspension geometry is different, on the one hand, the suspension components are stiffer and lighter, car and driver Says. It also has a wider track, a heavily reinforced chassis, and a different floor sump. Toyota even moved the battery to the rear for better weight distribution.
As of this writing, no one has been driving a Toyota GR Corolla. And while it’s getting more refined, the 2022 Subaru WRX “remains a fun cornering treat” car and driver reports. We will have to let the rally stage decide which is more sporty.
