Jazz is now a huge favorite after the news of Luka Doncic

Monday morning, when it wasn’t clear if Luka Doncic would play in the first round against the Utah Jazz, the Dallas Mavericks -115 were the favorites to win the series at BetMGM.

The news on Doncic didn’t get any better, and the odds for the series flipped in a way you rarely see.

The Mavericks said on Tuesday that Doncic has a calf strain and there is no timetable for his return. The series’ odds, which has been moving the Utah way since its release, is now the Utah 300 favorite.

You won’t see such a change often, unless the star suffers an injury. This explains why the Mavericks are a 240+ underdog.

It can take players two weeks to return from the calf strains. Doncic sustained the injury on Sunday in the Mavericks final of the regular season. The Mavs still had a chance to move up to the No. 3 seed on the final day of the season, but in retrospect, playing Doncic was a risk not worth the reward.

The Mavericks have been very good the past couple of months and looked like a dangerous playoff team. But that changes dramatically without Doncic. Some teams can go on a short run without the best player, but the Mavericks rely heavily on Doncic. If Utah can’t beat Dallas with Doncic out, it will be a long, long stretch of the season for the Jazz.

The series begins on Saturday. While the schedule for the remaining games has not been released, Game 4 will likely take place in the second weekend of the qualifiers. If Doncic misses a full two weeks, the Mavericks may already be over. If they are 3-1 up, Dallas may weigh the stakes of bringing Doncic back. And that is if Doncic is ready after two weeks of vacation.

Maybe Dallas can pull off some victories and Doncic can come back to close the streak. If you thought this could happen, the odds are in your favor now.
